A Roof Over Our Heads

You'll remember our porch started here.  Fine but the house had a pretty boring roof line with the porch extending directly into the garage.  No opposing angles or interest.

So we did this:

...and then this:

A little of this:

Followed by this:

Until we got this:

The metal roof is done!  I'm breathing a huge sigh of relief.  I really like how it turned out.  Ignore the ugly asphalt seam.  The original plan was to tooth in the old shingles with the new but it turns out that the old shingles were crumbling as the roofers tried to do so so these shingles will serve as a temporary solution until we can replace the entire roof next year.  My wallet needs a break.

Each step now has a very visual reward which really helps our fried brains.  Next up is the decorative wainscoting that will go in the inlay above the metal base in the triangle, bead board ceiling and miles and miles of trim.

  1. If your willing to share, how much did the metal roof cost? I'd love to replace the old cedar roof with metal, but i know they are very expensive.

    1. Our contract included some other work as well (gutters, piecing in shingles, etc.) so I'm not exactly sure. Our project was small but had a lot of cuts with a lot of waste it is tough to extrapolate this project over yours but from what I've read it ranges from $8-$11/sq. foot. Hope that helps!

  2. You're right on 'each step' having a very visual reward. This reminds you that there's progress; in this case, you have a new roof over your porch! Are you planning on upgrading the rest of your roof, or do you have other plans for now? Whichever you decide upon, I hope it comes out as good as this one! Good luck!

  3. The alteration that you did to your roof looks wonderful, and it somehow gave life to the ambiance of your house. I'm sure that it will look fabulous when you’re done with all your plans for it. I hope to see it soon! :)

  4. The black metal roof looks great with your home's black shutters. Many people believe that metal roofs look modern, however, they blend in well with all types of homes, including brick colonials. Do you get a lot of snow where you are? If so, an all-metal roof is a good choice since the snow just slides off it.
